Project: GIMP auto-update
GIMP [1] is an image manipulation program for Linux, Windows, BSD, and other Unixes.
Unfortunately, updating an existing GIMP installation (especially under Windows) still requires several steps: going to the GIMP website, downloading the newest version, installing it.
An automatic update feature, as it is for example implemented in Firefox would be very beneficial. Ideally this would also include updating GIMP extensions and plug-ins.

- Unlikely
Unlikely. Auto-update integrated into the application is something that's frowned upon by projects whose primary audience is non-Windows/Mac operating systems. They usually consider it a cheap hack around the real problem. (No system-wide update management)
Even if they accepted it, it'd probably be on the condition that the submitter maintain it for the rest of the updater's usable lifetime.by ssokolow on 21 Dec 2007 17:26
- but still it would help
hi wwokolow
although you might be right about the fact that per apclication update is not the best choice windows users will want it. under windows i wouldn't want it for the sake of ease of the update process but to know when an update is available. this would help both the user and the project as people would not blame gimp for bugs in long outdated versions as the user gets aware of him not using the latest version.by Giszmo on 26 Dec 2007 01:54

My main worry is that, as GIMP is a project whose primary target is Linux and other package-managed OSes, the developers might not accept such an addition. Make sure they will and under what terms before you pay someone to write it.

- Why not an app indenpendent package management ?
hi folks,
I'd rather suggest an application independent package management, eg. porting apt or rpm to win32.

I'd agree with you, but I doubt they'd do it. It's a much bigger task, after all.
Of course, for the record, I much prefer debs to rpms.by ssokolow on 28 Mar 2008 07:38
